‘Periferi’ is a project by Centrum för fotografi (CFF – the Centre for Photography), started in 2021 in the Västra Götaland region of Sweden. By publishing photozines by various photographers, the aim of the project is to spotlight photography created all around Sweden. The individual photographers’ fanzines are presented in a shared regional collection box.
So far, Periferi has been carried out in Västra Götaland (2021), Skåne (2022), and Northern Sweden (2023). The Centre for Photography aims to implement Periferi nationwide and create five boxes featuring approximately 75 different photographers’ works. The result will be a fantastic documentation of photography in contemporary Sweden. The photographers themselves handle the layout of their zines with guidance from the design agency Lundgren+Lindqvist.
For the series, Lundgren+Lindqvist designed an overarching visual identity, manifested by title stickers, made as oblong strips, which the photographers apply freely to their zines. These stickers, adjusted to match the height of the publications when turned vertically, are applied in a range of ways, from more structured approaches to the more chaotic, running over the spine. Some photographers have even chosen to seal their publications with the stickers.
Each year, a new fluorescent colour is introduced, which is used for the title stickers for each zine, as well as the general sticker used for the slip cases.
Lundgren+Lindqvist also designed a basic template for the zines, providing the photographers with some basic guidelines in the design of their publications. A typographic framework ensures consistency throughout the series, with titles and colophon pages always staying the same.
The first version took place in 2021 in Västra Götaland, resulting in 19 fanzines available in the webshop as individual publications, as well as a collection box. In Västra Götaland, the jury consisted of Elsa Modin/Hasselblad Library, Mette Muhli/Skövde Art Gallery, and graphic designer Andreas Friberg Lundgren of Lundgren+Lindqvist/LL’Editions.
During Autumn 2022, the project was carried out in Skåne, resulting in 14 new fanzines available in the webshop as individual publications, as well as a collection box. The Skåne jury included: Annie Lindberg/Skissernas Museum, art critic Thomas Millroth, designer Lisa Olausson, and Mia Bengtsson Plynning.
In Spring 2023, the Periferi project was conducted in Northern Sweden. This time, participants came from Västernorrland, Västerbotten, and Norrbotten, and they submitted their applications through an open call. The jury that selected the participants in 2023 consisted of Mia Bengtsson Plynning from CFF, Lina Aastrup/Västernorrlands County Museum, Cecilia Andersson/MAN Museum, Anna Norrlander, and Lejla Porovic/Sundsvalls Museum.
