Monokel Eyewear is a unisex sunglass label based in Stockholm, Sweden. All of the brand’s frames are handcrafted from organic- and biodegradable acetate, and all-black frames are made with recycled acetate. Each frame is handcrafted with tremendous attention to detail in a process taking well over three months. As a foundation for Monokel’s continuous improvement, third party lab tests and factory audits of our sub-suppliers are conducted with each production run. Monokel’s brand philosophy stems from a mix of simplicity and functionalism, paired with an endless curiosity for the human mind and its need for creative expression.

Monokel partnered with Lundgren+Lindqvist to redefine their visual identity, and for design and development of their new webshop. The concept of perception served as the guiding theme for the updated design system, where layering and transparency are used to allow text and images to overlap. The typographic system is streamlined, utilizing a single type size across the webshop. Disposition and layering emerge as the core design elements, guiding the overall visual structure.

While Monokel primarily aimed at selling directly to customers, the new website is also an embodiment of the updated Monokel brand. Many of the overlapping elements, all manifesting the concept of perception, were created using intricate CSS code, keeping it aligned with web standards while avoiding unnecessary scripting.

Monokel have been working with the Centra commerce platform since they first started, as a business-to-business brand. Centra is an API-first platform for e-commerce providing both modules for B2B and B2C. Combining Centra’s e-commerce API:s with the Storyblok CMS, the Monokel website runs as a NextJS application on Vercel servers.

Much like any contemporary e-commerce site, the Monokel webshop is a modular build including a number of micro-services. Except for the e-commerce platform itself, and the content management system, Monokel’s webshop integrates with Adyen for payments and the Swedish service Ingrid to enable various logistics options.

We continue our work with Monokel Eyewear refining the visual identity and expanding the webshop.
