In Vår Tids Konst (The Art of Our Time, 2023), Karl Palmås and Kalle Sanner explore the future visions that have shaped Gothenburg’s emerging jubilee architecture.

In 2023, Gothenburg marked its 400th anniversary, coinciding with the development of a new urban landscape. This architectural wave invites comparison with what was built for the city’s previous centennial in 1923, and more broadly, with a longer tradition of structures created for jubilees and world exhibitions.

Against this backdrop, sociologist Karl Palmås and photographer Kalle Sanner examine the built environment of contemporary Gothenburg. Through a study combining film, photography, and text, they trace the imagined futures underpinning the city’s recent architectural projects. Informed by conversations with architects, urban planners, and researchers involved in shaping the city, they pose a central question: In what way does jubilee architecture embody the art of our time?

Lundgren+Lindqvist designed the film’s titles, with words appearing in a seemingly random sequence—echoing the experience of seeing the city through a car window, a central motif of the film. In a subsequent collaboration, we also designed Palmås and Sanner’s book of the same name.

This short film follows the duo’s earlier collaboration, Too Late for History to End (2020), which reflects on modernity, globalization, and the concept of ruins through two iconic sites: Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport and London’s Crystal Palace.

The film is available to watch in its entirety on LL’Editions Cinema.
