Elvine

January 19th, 2011

Elvine is a clothing brand from Gothenburg, Sweden. In their own words they are “inspired by Gothenburg’s unrefined subcultures and the legacy of traditional craftmanship” and their aim is to “create sophisticated clothes for unsophisticated behaviour”.

It was time for Elvine to re-design their homepage since they produce a lot of material and they needed a website where they could present it all in a good way. The site was designed by Next Century Modern who came to us for development and implementation in WordPress. The homepage is separated from Elvine’s web shop and it’s main functionality is to build the brand and communicate brand values to the customers.

The site includes a number of custom solutions, most notably in the Journal section where the editor can choose to add either an image slideshow, an embedded movie from YouTube or Vimeo or an embedded magazine from Issuu. The fonts “Crimson” and “OFL Sorts Mill Goudy TT” are both loaded using Google’s font API.

Oh Land

November 1st, 2010

Oh Land is Danish Nanna Øland Fabricius, a ballet dancer turned singer and producer who recently moved to New York City. She makes electronic music with the aim to “feel like 2050 meets something really classic, like meeting a stranger that feels as familiar as an old friend”.

Record label, Epic Records / Sony BMG, approached us asking for a full screen video solution for her music and videos. They also needed the site to be based on WordPress so that they could easily update the content.

Inspired by the look and feel of the drum machines and synthesizers used in Oh Land’s music we designed the site on a grid made up of squares. The content is placed at random, each time a new section of the site is opened, with the different modules always staying within the grid. The number of modules displayed is determined by the size of the visitor’s browser, to make sure each user has the best experience possible. This organic approach along with the minimalistic interface made sure that no part of the constantly changing video background would always be covered.

All content is loaded over a Flash video background and new content is fetched via AJAX. Much of the site functionality is custom written and the site includes a custom plug-in for the WordPress admin panel where the editor can edit the video background, including adding or removing clips and changing the timing of the loops. Another technique used is IP detection to show specific posts for visitor from selected countries.

Göteborg Nonstop

November 1st, 2010

Göteborg nonstop is a site dedicated to give the visitor an unbiased guide to Göteborg (Gothenburg), Sweden’s second largest city. Tired of the fact that similar websites were sponsored or filled with advertisements for events in one specific category, Göteborg Nonstop’s founder Marcus Persson started a WordPress blog where he highlighted clubs, exhibitions or other events in and around Göteborg that he felt did not get the recognition they deserved. He soon gathered a large following of readers, as well as building a network of contributors to the blog and consequently Göteborg Nonstop grew too big for the standard WordPress.com blog network.

Lundgren+Lindqvist were asked to design and develop the new Göteborg Nonstop based on a self hosted WordPress publishing platform. The first part of the project was structuring the existing material and separating posts in to the more personal blogs and a news feed. Göteborg Nonstop also requested some added functionality to the site; mainly an events calendar and the possibility to add advertisement, which is carefully selected so that the site will not fall in the same trap as previous mentioned website. Both functions are now integrated in the WordPress admin panel of the site, using a combination of existing plug-ins and code written specifically for the site. Other special features of Göteborg Nonstop include the round thumbnails for each post on the main page, generated automatically from the first image of each post.

The main page header illustration is designed by Karolina Eriksson from the Lula collective.

The Healing Arts

November 1st, 2010

The Healing Arts is a London based collective that “was born out of a desire to explore both the collective creative process, and an interest in how ideas propagate. It originally formed around an interest in experimental music but we quickly realized a shared curiosity for the arts, science, technology and society at large.”

We were approached to design and develop The Healing Arts identity and web presence. After narrowing down the groups influences to a few key areas, such as mysticism, symbolism and alchemy, we started the process of developing the identity. In our research, we stumbled upon Antahkarana, an ancient Tibetan symbol for healing. The meaning of Antahkarana in many ways related to the values of the collective while also incorporating the mysticism and symbolism. Hence, we made the symbol the base for the new logotype.
The letters of the word mark, that is based on the Replica typeface (Lineto), were interlaced to make it more compact and unique.

The foiled business cards were designed as the three separate parts of the symbol, each card carrying one of the initials on the back.

The Healing Arts members are all active on a number of networks and websites across the web and therefore our main idea for their website was to aggregate as much of that activity as possible in to the collective’s site. Using the network’s API’s and RSS feeds we incorporated members feeds from Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and Soundcloud in to the site, as well as some of the members personal blogs.

Lundgren+Lindqvist

November 1st, 2010

About a year ago it struck us that we really needed to rethink our visual identity. We have travelled quite some way since we first started out, soon three years ago. Along the way we have developed both as a company and as individuals and the original identity and Flash-based website suddenly felt like a pair of old, worn out jeans.
Consequently, it was time for something new. As per usual in the design industry, client work is always prioritized over the work you do for yourself. Hence, it took quite some time to develop the new identity and website. Now the last pieces have finally arrived from the printer, ready to share with you.

Our business cards are triplexed GF Smith Colorplan (Cool Grey, Bright Red and Pristine White) and have negative embossing, foil blocking and UV-varnish. The letter paper is Colorplan Pristine White with negative embossing and the S65 window envelopes are made out of Colorplan Cool Grey.

The promotional poster, which was mailed to selected advertising agencies, clients, design magazines and blogs, to promote the new website, is printed on both sides on MultiArt Silk paper with partial UV-varnish and water-varnish finishing. One side displays the actual website and the other the underlying code, two sides of our business. The intentional typo in the headline (neue instead of new) hints of the use of the Helvetica Neue typeface throughout the identity.

Filmhouse

November 1st, 2010

Filmhouse is a film production studio striving to be on the cutting edge of the industry. Founded 8 years ago they have established themselves with a custom built studio facility outside Skövde and a Gothenburg office.

We were approached to redefine Filmhouse’s web presence leading to the creation of a new website. The main objectives were to emphasize the company’s strive to be innovative and to show off their great facilities, which are also subleased. This was accomplished by involving Filmhouse in the creative process and designing a website entirely built on a film background, displaying the studio, which immediately lets the visitor know what services the company provide. A number of short films with different scenarios are played at random. This also provides Filmhouse with an easy way of keeping the website fresh and updated by filming new material whenever something exciting happen in the studio. We used the green screen, the dinner table of the film industry, as the colour source for links, button etc.

By clicking the Facilities link in the menu the camera is zoomed out from the main view, lifted up, and you get a walk around the facilities with a glimpse of the daily activity of the studio.

The site also have a Portfolio section – that collects videos from Filmhouse’s Vimeo account – and a blog.

The website is built on a WordPress CMS platform for a straight forward User Interface and back web. Ajax is used to load new content on top of the background video in Flash and Javascript make the site interact with the Flash video, for example pausing and playing the right movie.

Bunnskog Karcenti

September 30th, 2010

Bunnskog Karcenti is a design studio based in Stockholm, Sweden. Their clients include Swedish street wear company WeSC, design magazine Form and the Clandestino music festival in Gothenburg. We were approached to do the programming of their new website. At first they were thinking about a Flash based portfolio site but when discussing the disadvantages of Flash we decided upon using JavaScript to achieve the effect they were after. This means the site works fine in all browsers and on any device; a big leap forward from the studio’s old Flash based site.

The main feature of the site is the scaling of the content. In the portfolio section, the site scales all images to make the most use of the browser window. The challenge was to make the functionality so versatile that it will work with any number of images, mixed image proportions and of course different sized screens. The solution gives the site a very smooth feel and provide the user with the utmost experience of the portfolio, on any screen. Each case loads a set of large images that are then scaled using the technique described above. When a user click an image, the gallery is displayed in a full screen view, which loads instantly.

Clandestino Festival 2010

September 30th, 2010

The Clandestino festival takes place in Gothenburg in June every year and the 2010 edition was the 8th festival since the start. The festival’s main part is music and the goal is to showcase artistes who otherwise rarely reach Sweden. Musicians, bands and DJs come from all over the globe, even places as distant as Haiti, Kongo-Kinshasa and Mali. Besides music, another very important part of the festival is Clandestino Talks, which is discussion groups and lectures where the visitors can listen and debate a number of subjects with experts from within that specific field.

The festival has always kept an open mind when it comes to marketing, and given its designers, Bunnskog Karcenti, the freedom to think outside the box. The identity of the 2010 edition of the festival was based on a number of graphical patterns in black and white. These were used on posters, in adverts and in the festival program. The many different patterns created a strong and varied visual identity and when we were asked to code the website the main aim was to use as many of the patterns as possible. This was solved by using a randomly selected pattern as the background for each page loaded.

Another strong identity marker for Clandestino is the font “Numberplate – France” by Stephan Müller. Using an @font-face import, we were able to use the font through out the website.
